I'm sure many are surprised he lasted so long.
Judging by recent pictures of him, there wasn't much keeping him alive.

65 is a decent innings for a raging alcoholic.

If I should fall from grace with God Where no doctor can relieve me If I'm buried in the sod But the angels won't receive me Let me go, boys, let me go, boys Let me go down in the mud, where the rivers all run dry This land was always ours It was the proud land of our fathers It belongs to us and them Not to any of the others Let them go, boys, let them go, boys Let them go down in the mud, where the rivers all run dry Bury me at sea Where no murdered ghost can haunt me If I rock upon the waves And no corpse can lie upon me Let me go, boys, let me go, boys Let me go down in the mud, where the rivers all run dry If I should fall from grace with God Where no doctor can relieve me If I'm buried in the sand But the angels won't receive me Let me go, boys, let me go, boys Let me go down in the mud, where the rivers all run dry
RIP Shane.

And being a raging alcoholic is hardly a great character trait.

COYI - There isn't a person alive that would rather have a beer with you instead of McGowan. Your legacy will be one of a cunt.

Yeah, a bit like Leonard Cohen eh? So only having one hit makes you a shit songwriter? I love WHO.

RIP Shane. It is amazing that he made it as far as he did. He was a funny bloke. I first met him when he ran a punk record stall in Soho and was in the Nipple Erectors.

Might see the song finally hit No.1 this Xmas, not that the charts really mean anything these days, but be a nice legacy for him and Kirsty

Never mind Fairytale of New York, as great as it is, Rum Sodomy & The Lash is a fucking monster of an album and well worth listening to in it's entirety. THAT is a legacy.

Tbf he’s looked at Deaths door for much of his life so he’s done well to last as long as he did.
I always assumed McGowan & the Pogues were 100 percent Irish. Didn’t realise they were all from England albeit leaning into their Irish roots with the music.
Fairytale of New York is obviously a classic so even if you weren’t familiar with his other stuff and only took that into account he deserves a lot of credit for co writing that.
RIP
